How to Perform a Water Fast

There's no more grueling type of fast or cleansing diet than a pure water fast. On this fast, you can only have water. According to many alternative health experts, the health benefits can be extraordinary. Fasting allows the body time to heal from all of the toxins and pollutants in our food and environment. It also costs nothing to do. Follow these steps to learn more.

Plan your water fast

  1. 1-Select a length of time to do your water fast. While many regular fasters can do a water fast from 3 to 30 days, beginners should experiment by trying several shorter fasts first to see how their bodies react. Try a 2 day water fast, just to see how things go, and if things go well, continue.

  2. 2-Plan your water fast for a period during which you will not be under a lot of stress or during which fasting might interfere with your daily routine.

  3. 3-many doctors who once recommended colon cleanses, now advise against them. Your body will naturally cleanse itself. Many people found that an enema made them weak, dizzy, and dehydrated.

  4. 4-Prepare yourself for the many side effects you may experience during fasting, like headaches, dizziness and nausea. Be prepared to stop the fast before any of these symptoms become overwhelming. Remember, during the next couple days, if you don't clean out your body, your body will clean out itself by urination and bowel movements and it could be a rough couple of days.

  5. 5-Consult your doctor if you have any medical condition, or take any medications. This may make fasting difficult or put too much strain on your body.

Begin Your Water Fast

  1. 1-Get plenty of rest during your water fast. You may experience a drop in stamina and energy during this time. Don't overexert yourself. Maintain healthy sleep patterns.

  2. 2-Drink at least 7 to 10 glasses, each 8 oz., every day. Natural spring water is the best option, but if you don't have access to that, then whatever you need to do to drink enough water is what you'll have to do. Tap water is what most do.

  3. 3-Alternate a juice fast with a water fast if you're contemplating a longer fasting period. That way, your body can receive important vitamins and nutrients on a periodic basis.

  4. 4-Break your fast with the cleanest and easiest foods to digest. This means fruits as a primary, and vegetables secondary. Stay away from the processed junk that got you clogged up in the first place.
  5. 5 - Avoid intense exercise during this time. Instead, try yoga. It's a calming way ofstretching the body's muscles, and getting the good exercise that a fasting body needs. You may also do light walking to keep your muscles strong and to aid in the detoxification process.

  • After your fast, drink grapefruit juice. An hour or two after the grapefruit juice is consumed, the digestive system should be reawakened, though "groggy". Feel free to slowly eat an apple. That should suffice. Do this at the end of the day and sleep. Then you can graduate to yogurt and whole grains, then eventually meat products. One day of recovery is recommended for every five days of fasting.
  • Depending on how big you are to begin with will depend on how long your fast will take to work and lose weight.
  • Eat foods high in vitamins and mineral the day before your fast.
  • The most important rule of a fast is to always be under a doctor's watchful eye, especially if you are doing a 5-30 day water fast. The best idea is to consult your doctor and ask which fast is right for you. Water fasts should not be taken lightly.
  • If you are looking for a more healthy alternative, try a juice fast.

  • This can be a means of weight loss, but if you go back to eating junk food, instead of eating healthy foods you will regain weight and reload your body with many toxins you worked so hard to rid yourself of.
  • Don't fast if you are on the brink of anorexia or you find yourself disliking food.
  • some conditions are contraindicated for fasting including late stages of liver or kidney disease; insulin dependent diabetics; advance stage alcoholics; hyperthyroidism and advanced thyroid malfunctions, those with irreversible wasting diseases like AIDS (advanced stage), tuberculosis, infectious diseases like advanced SARS and H5N1 Avian influenza or other lethal bird flus; extensive carcinomas and metastatic cancers (when fasting would contribute to their malnourished state); atrial fibrillation; cardiovascular diseases, vascular diseases with poor circulation to various parts of the body, cerebral degeneration due to arteriosclerosis (organic brain syndrome) or Alzheimer's disease; serious cardiac diseases including heart failure, severe cardiac rhythm disturbances, post-myocardial infarction, and severe cardiomyopathy and valvular heart defects.
  • Always consult a physician before attempting any sort of a fast or cleansing diet, especially a water fast. Many medical conditions such as diabetes and hypoglycemia can be aggravated by fasting. Stop your fast and seek medical treatment immediately if severe gastrointestinal distress or episodes of fainting or disorientation occur.

How to Lose Weight With Water

Drinking water can be a useful tool in a dieter’s arsenal when weight loss is a goal. Follow the steps below to learn how to lose weight with water.

Follow the Water Diet

1-Drink water throughout the day. Drinking water during the day can help keep you feeling full without consuming high-calorie coffees and snacks. You may also eat less when you do have a snack, as you should already have the sensation of being full. Consuming fewer calories on a daily basis can help speed weight loss.

2-Drink a glass of water before every meal. In several studies of weight loss in overweight adults, those who drank water before eating a meal regularly consumed fewer calories and saw improved weight loss results.
The effect of water on meal calorie consumption has been shown to be more effective in older adults than in young adults. Regardless of your age, if you use water before a meal to increase weight loss, do not forget to monitor quantities and calorie intake of your food as well.
Some reports of the water diet recommend drinking a full glass of water before, during, and after a meal to aid digestion and speed weight loss from the water.

3-Replace sweetened drinks with water. Instead of drinking soda, alcoholic beverages, smoothies, or other high-calorie drinks, grab a glass or bottle of water.
Swapping in a zero-calorie beverage for high-calorie alternatives can spare you hundreds of calories per day, further aiding in weight loss.

4-Drink cold water to speed your metabolism. In a study on water-induced thermogenesis, researchers found that drinking water caused an increase in energy expenditure in both men and women, likely caused by the body’s efforts to warm the water to body temperature.
In the study, men burned fats to provide the energy to warm the water, and women burned carbohydrates.
The effects of elevated metabolism began about 10 minutes after consuming the water and peaked at 30-40 minutes after drinking.

5-Match any alcohol consumption with equal amounts of water. This matched fluid intake should not count toward your daily water intake, according to the Water Diet. Any water you drink to match alcohol should be in addition to your daily water goal.

6-Drink water and cut salt intake to lose water weight. Reducing the amount of dietary salt you consume (by cutting table salt, canned or frozen foods, and lunch meat from your diet) can help you lose water weight quickly, particularly when combined with an increase in daily water intake.

7-Follow a short water detox diet. Water detox and diet plans often include short periods that involve significant fluid intake to flush toxins from the system and reduce bloating.
Consider a plan like the Sassy Water anti-bloat diet jumpstart, which involves drinking an entire pitcher of specially flavored water each day for 4 days at the beginning of a diet plan.
Water detox plans also typically promote foods naturally high in water, such as watermelon, soups, and leafy green vegetables.

8-Combine a calorie-restricted diet and a water diet. Drinking 16 ounces of water before each meal and limiting daily calorie intake (1200 for women and 1500 for men) can jumpstart weight loss and help dieters maintain weight loss successfully for up to a year.

Follow a Water Fast

1-Try replacing a single meal with pure water. If you have never fasted, take small steps to prepare your body for the challenge of fasting.
Consider skipping lunch and just drinking water or unsweetened, unflavored seltzer water in its place.
2-Try a 24-hour water fast. Prepare for 7 days before a 24-hour fast. Start by removing foods and drinks high in sugar, fat, and caffeine 7 days before you intend to begin your water fast.
3-Replace unhealthy foods with lean proteins, salads, and fresh produce. Increase your water intake each day until you are comfortable consuming at least a half-gallon each day.
4-Consider taking herbal supplements or finding a safe water additive to balance electrolytes. Although the water fast does not permit sweeteners or solid food during the fast, it often recommends prune supplements or natural salts to prevent water intoxication.
5-Sip unsweetened green tea for breakfast and seltzer water for lunch. Any time you feel discomfort or hunger pains, drink additional water. Add a squeeze of fresh lime juice to the green tea or seltzer to add some flavor if desired.

Often these choices are very normal to us but they will cause obesity and in some cases they may even lead to certain types of cancer. In this article we are going to look at 4 different ideas to help lose weight effectively over the next one month.

Eat Small Meals

As you work to find quick ways to lose weight you should arrange your eating habits to eat 4-5 smaller meals instead of 3 large meals a day. By planning out a series of smaller meals you can reduce hunger cravings and help to avoid overeating. These meals should consist of smaller healthy portions of starch free items and fruits and vegetables that will not only give you nutrition but they will help to detoxify your body. A piece of fruit an hour before a meal also curbs your appetite because of the natural sugars and fiber.

This works quickly with great health benefits, plus it is easy is to drink plenty of water. Everyone has their ideas of exactly how many ounces of water you should drink in a day, but let's be practical and say drink a bunch. Get a metal water bottle that is 24 to 30 ounces, keep it full and carry it with you all day. Set your goal to fill it up twice and you will be in good shape. If you drink water before you eat a meal this will help in two ways. One, you will feel fuller and two; you will have the added advantage improved digestion.

Cut Out the Soda!

Wow! This is one that so many people miss. Many people think that drinking diet soda or diet drinks like Snapple etc. are ok because they are diet. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most of these convenient bottled drinks use high fructose corn syrup which in a lot of cases is made with mercury, caustic soda and hydroelectric acid and plays a huge role in the obesity dilemma in this country. Many soda companies have switched from real sugar to high fructose corn syrup in order to save money, but this syrup can be very detrimental to your body's metabolism. This high fructose corn syrup alternative is slower to metabolize and quickly turns to fat. If you really want to loose weight, improve the look of your skin while being kind to your body you need to abandon the soda ASAP!

Ease into Exercise

All of us have heard that we need to exercise when it comes to losing weight and a fact that many just do not want to hear but it is critical. Exercise is one of the most effective quick ways to lose weight as it is needed to increase the body's metabolism. If you want to exercise but don't have the time, simply start at home. You can begin with only a few simple exercises like push ups or sit-ups. I have a tip for you. If you are an unmotivated soul, start off very slowly. First start by doing 10 sit-ups every other day. This will not necessarily give you 6-pack abs but it will introduce you to the sit-up process. Once you are comfortable with 10 sit-ups, then increase your exercise load to 15 then 20 repetitions and keep moving up from there. Keep progressing every 6-8 days. Start slowly and as time goes on if you keep it up you may find yourself doing 200 sit ups every other day. This is a great goal. This will help you to burn calories and fat while increasing your metabolism. If you stay focused you will find that exercise is one of the most effective quick ways to lose weight.

Rapid Weight Loss With Water Fasting

Water fasting requires you to eat no food for a designated amount of time. Almost all religions employ some type of fast as a spiritual ritual, and some people use a water fast to cleanse toxins from their bodies and to symbolize a fresh start. Water fasting may result in some weight loss, but that weight will most likely return as soon as you get back to eating food. Water fasting can help you jump start a new diet program, provided that you approach it in a mentally and physically sound manner.
Eat lightly for several days before beginning your fast to help your system slow down and begin to cleanse without complete deprivation. Eat light meals that include raw fruits and vegetables, and small servings of lean protein and brown rice. The intake of extra fiber will help your system continue to move smoothly as you undertake the fast. Carve out one to three days for your water fast, making it a time where you do not have to undertake any physically strenuous activity or make important decisions. Although your intention may be weight loss, do not exercise during your fast.

The fast itself is quite simple in that you take in only water for a set number of days. If this is your first time water fasting, make it last only a day to see how your body will react. Drink as much water as you like, and spend your time reading or meditating.
A water fast may make you feel weak and dizzy. Expect to lose as much as 5 lbs. in a few days, but realize that most of this weight is simply fluids, and it will likely return when you begin to re-introduce food. Keep in mind that you may grow irritable during the fast.
A water fast may put you in better touch with your appetite---really feeling hunger may help you understand your response to food triggers. Proponents of fasting believe that a periodic, short-term fast can help you live longer and delay the onset of chronic disease. A fast may assist your liver, kidneys and lymphatic system in clearing the body of toxins, which will help you process food more efficiently when you return to solid foods. Remember, in the long term, you cannot rely on a fast alone for weight loss. It may kick start your program, but a healthy diet combined with moderate activity and exercise is the only proven long-term weight-loss solution.
Although you might lose a small amount of fat during a fast, you are likely to lose muscle tissue as well, and this results in a slower metabolism. Fasts that are followed for more than two or three days can cause unpleasant side effects such as sensitivity to cold temperatures, digestive ailments, brittle nails and extreme tiredness. Repeated periods of fasting may cause heart problems and nutritional deficiencies. Certain people should never fast: the underweight, pregnant and nursing women, those with eating disorders and anemia, and people with chronic health problems like cancer, lung disease and diabetes.

Water Fasting Weight Loss

Water fasting weight loss can be very dramatic. In the early days of a water fast, a few pounds per day of weight loss is common.

As the fast progresses the weight loss slows.
Weight Loss Averages
The average weight loss for the first week of a water fast is 11 pounds. For the second week it is 7 pounds and for the third week 3 pounds.

Therefore the average daily weight loss for a fast of 21 days is a pound per day.

The rate of FAT loss during a water fast is only around 2 or 3 pounds per week.
The rest of the water fasting weight loss is water weight.

The glycogen stores of the body are depleted during a longer fast and this, together with the few pounds of water needed to store glycogen, account for a few pounds of the weight lost.

This weight will come back within a couple of days after breaking the fast as the glycogen stores are replenished.

So, now that you see that the rate of FAT loss is only around 2 or 3 pounds per week, do you still think you should try extended water fasting for weight loss?
Water Fasting Diet
Using fasting as a diet is not a good idea AT ALL! When your appetite returns after a fast it is voracious, and that kind of hunger can't be ignored. Fasting is also a surefire way of raising your body weight set point. And when your weight set point is higher than you currently weigh, you can bet that your appetite will be insatiable, and your desire for exercise will be non-existent, as your body is desperate to get back to its set point.

So instead of water fasting to lose weight, how about finding a way of eating that you absolutely love, and eat your way to ideal health and body weight? Sounds like a much better plan to me. And I wish I had done that rather than doing any water fasting. If you need help with this, consider reading my ebook: From Fat To Fabulous.

Fasting And Weight Loss
If you choose to water fast in order to achieve water fasting weight loss, you will likely encounter the following:

You will be unable to exercise while fasting as your energy decreases dramatically after a couple of days (as it should, you are supposed to rest while fasting).
After you break the fast you will take some time to recover sufficiently to begin exercise again (roughly the same amount of time that you fasted you will need to gradually ease back in to exercise and you may not be able to exercise intensely for quite a while due to low energy).
Your metabolism will be very slow.
You will also be instructing your body to store fat more easily.
You will need to eat very carefully following your fast in order to maintain your water fasting weight loss, and even then, it will be VERY challenging, if not outright impossible.
So, with this all being the case, don't you think it's a lot easier to embark on an intensive exercise routine along with a great diet (that you love!) NOW instead of fasting?

Water Fasting For Health
If you have another compelling reason, besides weight loss, for fasting, then great!

However, if weight loss is your only reason for it, then there are far better ways to lose weight.

When it comes to weight loss our minds are our most powerful tool, and it is crucial, and I mean crucial that losing weight feels like pure joy and ease and absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with deprivation or punishment.

If the steps we take to lose weight feel like anything other than joy and ease then it is very likely that all we are creating is disorder and disharmony and it is then almost guaranteed that our success will be short-lived.

Maintaining Water Fasting Weight Loss
Okay, so you've been on an extended water fast (against all my advice, why?), you've lost some weight, now how do you keep it off?

I did two ten day water fasts in the past, where I did lose lots of weight, but gained it all back, I then did low calorie dieting to get it off again. All of this is a terrible idea, and just leads to a metabolism that is super low and a body that loves storing fat more than anything else.

So my honest advice to you would be, forget about the weight for now. Focus only on restoring your metabolism to a good level, getting your energy back and feeling good and healthy. Eat as much healthy low fat plant food as you CAN every day. Yes, you will gain weight, but you will also be regaining a properly functioning metabolism. The fastest way to metabolic recovery is actually in overfeeding, which is why you have such a voracious past fasting appetite.

To minimise fat gain and maximise metabolic recovery as well as helping your body to set a lower weight 'set-point' eat plenty of low fat plant foods such as raw fruits and vegetables, cooked starches, beans and vegetables and eliminate all oils from your diet, and minimise nuts, seeds and other fatty plant foods. Eat as much as you desire, showing your body that there is no shortage whatsoever. Exercise gently - only as much as you have energy for. Get LOTS of sleep. The fastest metabolic recoveries happen with people sleeping 12 hours a night!

You WILL gain some weight - so just get off the scale and forget about it. Eat lots of super healthy low fat plant foods and your body will balance out again.
